Role of Alcohol

Domestic violence is often linked to the consumption of alcohol. Statistics vary but the majority of research suggests that somewhere between 60 to 70% of men who assault their partners do so when under the influence of alcohol. However these statistics need to be considered with care. It is important to remember there is not an automatic connection between the two.

It is also important to note that alcohol (or other drug use) should never be considered as an excuse for domestic or other violence.

A good way to think about the relationship between alcohol and domestic violence is to think of them as two spate problems which often appear together. This separation is important when considering how to tackle the problems. It must not be assumed that tackling alcohol abuse will reduce the violence, in fact it may increase*.

If you are concerned about alcohol misuse, domestic violence or both, please contact the appropriate agencies in the Services section.
